3. OBSERVATION
Ensure that on approach to junctions that you show EQUAL observation to the LEFT and to the RIGHT.
On approach to roundabouts ensure that you also show EQUAL observation to the LEFT and the RIGHT. A common fault I find with clients going for the test is to focus ONLY on traffic from the RIGHT. The tester is looking for observation to the Left also eg a cyclist or pedestrian or maybe even a car in the wrong lane.
4. REACT TO HAZARDS
On approach to the town look out for and anticipate hazards
For example vehicles parked on the left may reverse out onto the main road. The pedestrian outside DOMS bar may step out onto the road.
Anticipate what may be around the corner eg a cyclist, pedestrians or a slow moving tractor and trailor.
Roadworks. Look out for and react properly to roadworks that you may encounter
Always show caution when you are passing a school
On a summers day expect a lot of action at the local playground
5. MIRRORS
Use Mirrors correctly ie before changing speed or direction
Nb use the Middle and the Right hand mirror before overtaking a hazard/ Parked Car ,then before you move out if safe.
Nb Before turning Left and on approach to a Roundabout Check your Middle mirror , then your Left Wing mirror for cyclists and pedestrians before making the turn.
6. CLEARANCE/OVERTAKE
When Overtaking parked vehicles leave good clearance, leave the width of a car door between you the car you are overtaking if possible.
7. SIGNALS
Use signals in good time to let others know of your intent ie turning Left, turning Right, Overtaking and/ or pulling in and stopping.
HANDSIGNALS
During the course of your test, the Tester will ask you to demonstrate the Hand signals while stationary. These are on pages 85and 86 of Rules of the Road. Also Angela will cover them during a lesson.
Note sections 8,9,and 10 cover the Motorcycle Test only
11. PROGRESS
When road and traffic conditions allow, keep up with the speed limit on the straight ie 50 km around the town or the Tester will mark you for lack of Progress.
Do not sit unnecessarily long at junctions and Roundabouts. Aslong as you can pull out safely without the oncoming car having to brake , then take the opening.
12. VEHICLE CONTROLS
Gears.Always drive the car in the correct Gear for the Speed and driving conditions you are subject to.Use the higher gears when possible.
Do not let the car Labour and also do not have your engine revving unnecessarily high. At all times DO NOT COAST.
Clutch If you are not sure what COASTING is, this will be explained during a lesson with Angela.
Footbrake Correct use of the Footbrake should be slow, smooth and progressive.
Handbrake Use the Handbrake when necessary but do not use unnecessarily. Use to prevent your vehicle going in the direction you DON’T want it to go.
Steering Keep both hands on the Steering Wheel at the Correct position.
13. SPEED
Obey the Various Speed Signs, around Donegal Town there are 4 distinct speed zones
50 km around Donegal Town.
60Km in Town Outskirts good landmarks to watch out for are Mickey Macs garage on exiting Donegal town heading for Killybegs and also after the hospital on your Left on exiting Donegal Town heading to letterkenny.
80 Km on a Regional road. Look out for the B and B sign after you pass the Abbey Vocational School exiting Donegal town on approach to Sligo.Nb there is NO 60Km on this stretch of road, it changes straight from 50Km to 80Km
If the Tester takes you on the By Pass this is a National Road with a Speed limit of 100Km. Depending on Road and Traffic conditions, the Tester is expecting PROGRESS on this stretch.
14. TRAFFIC CONTROLS
Obey various Signs and Road Markings
Ensure you do a FULL STOP at all STOP junctions.
If Traffic allows proceed with caution after correct observation at Yield junctions.
15. RIGHT OF WAY
At Stop and Yield signs give way to traffic on your Right. Do not pull out infront of an oncoming vehicle. If in doubt, don’t go out !
At Roundabouts give way to traffic already on the Roundabout and traffic on your Right.
